Last night I was lucky enough to a sneak peek screening of Moonrise Kingdom. Wes Anderson hasn’t done a live film since The Darjeeling Limited (if you don’t count Fantasic Mr.Fox). Anderson is one of my favorite directors. I love every single one of his movies and I own all of the Criterion Collection versions. Every time I go into one of his films I am always worried that this is going to be the one, the one that sucks and that never happens. I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was a Wes Anderson film in every way from the sets, to the dialouge to the costume design and yet somehow it still felt fresh. It was funny and sweet and dark. The cast of characters were all fun especially the young leads played newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward who delightfully toe the line between the days of childhood and adulthood. While still whimsical this might be Anderson’s most accesible film. Definitely more light than his previous work. Overall the film is a joy to watch and will more than soothe any die hard fan’s appetite.
